Loomis was born in 1892 in Syracuse, New York. Walt and Roger Reed in The Illustrator in America say that "it was a visit to the nearby studio of Howard Chandler Christy that made him decide to seek for himself an artist's career." He studied in New York at the Art Students League under George Bridgman and F.V. du Mond when he was 19 and went back to the Midwest (he grew up in Zanesville, Ohio) in 1915 to Chicago to work in an art studio there. He continued his education at the Chicago Art Institute. After military service in World War I, Loomis worked for a couple of advertising agencies before opening his own studio at 360 North Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago where he listed his "subjects" as "Character Studies, Figures, Historical Subjects, Interiors, Covers, Posters, Portraits, Still Life, Landscapes" and his "mediums" as "Black and white, Charcoal, Color, Dry Brush, Oil, Watercolor, Pastel, Wash." At left is a sample of his work from 1928. He taught at the American Academy of Art, in Chicago, during the 1930s and that it was there he perfected the teaching techniques that he codified in his first book, Fun With a Pencil, in 1939. The self-portrait/caricature at the top of this page is the final illustration in that book. “هانکه” در سال 1997 فیلم Funny Games را ساخت و اکنون پس از 10 سال دست به بازسازی فیلم خود و تهیه‌ی نسخه‌ی امریکایی این فیلم زده است. وقتى “گاس ون‌سنت” در سال 1998 همین کار را با فیلم “روانى” هیچکاک انجام داد، همه او را به چاپلوسى و غیراوریژینال بودن متهم کردند و کمتر کسى از این تجربه‌ی رسمى و جسورانه‌ی او استقبال کرد، اما در مورد هانکه با توجه به اعتبارش به عنوان یکى از نوابغ معاصر سینماى هنرى، پیش‌بینى مى‌شود که این اتفاق کمتر بیافتد. وقتى فیلم اوریژینال کارى بى‌عیب و نقص و در زمان خود نوآورانه‌ای از هیچکاک، یکى از اساتید بزرگ سینما باشد، عرضه‌ی فیلمى براى جوانان نسل امروز که اشتهاى آن‌ها از دیدن تریلرهاى تکرارى اشباع شده است، کارى به‌مراتب سخت‌تر خواهد بود. “بازی‌های بامزه” شاید یکی از خشن‌ترین فیلم‌های یک دهه‌ی اخیر باشد، اما نکته‌ی جالب این‌جاست که بیننده چیز چندانی از این خشونت را با چشم نمی‌بیند. در فیلم‌های جنگی و اکشن ده‌ها برابر این فیلم، آدم کشته می‌شود اما تفاوت در این‌جاست که هانکه حساسیت ما را به خشونت و آسیب‌دیدن بسیار بالا برده است. هانکه می‌خواهد هشدار بدهد اما نه به شیوه‌ی کلیشه‌ای…

برای کسی هر دو برگردان هانکه را از این فیلم‌نامه دیده باشد، انتخاب میان این دو سخت خواهد بود. هر دو فیلم به یک اندازه قوی‌اند و ماجرای قاتلین خوش‌برورویی هستند که قتل برای آن‌ها یک بازی بامزه و یا عجیب است. هانکه این بار فیلمش را با بودجه‌ای بیشتر از فیلم قبلی (حدود 15 میلیون دلار) ساخته، اما چیزی بر آن نیافزوده و یا از آن نکاسته و حیرت‌آور این‌که بر خلاف فیلم پیشین، از جهت مالی با شکست روبرو شده است. هانکه فیلمساز کهنه‌کاری است که خشونت و مطالعه‌ی آن در جامعه‌ی امروز تم ثابت آثار او را تشکیل می‌دهد. فیلم‌های او هم‌زمان هم جذاب و هم دافعه برانگیزند. “بازی‌های بامزه” هم مثل سایر آثار هانکه از گونه فیلم‌هایی‌ست که همه چیز فقط نمایش داده می‌شود و نه توضیح. صحنه به صحنه بر ابهامات و سوالات تماشاگر اضافه می‌شود اما در عین حال، قضیه به صورتی پیش می‌رود که هیچ پاسخی هم ما را ارضا نخواهد کرد. هانکه اشاره کرده که در پی سینمایی است که در آن رفتار کاراکترها به‌سادگی از دیدگاه جامعه‌شناختی یا روان‌شناسی، روشن نیست. در کنار این ویژگی‌ها باید به حضور “تیم راث” و “نئومی واتس” هم در این فیلم اشاره کرد، بازیگرانی که هم‌چون هانکه، فیلم‌های خود را با دقت و وسواس زیادی انتخاب می‌کنند و در بالاترین سطح به ایفای نقش می‌پردازند.

عده‌ی زیادی تحمل دیدن چنین فیلم‌هایی را ندارند چون به همه‌ی تصورات تماشاگر از یک فیلم سینمایی و قراردادهای نانوشته‌ی کلاسیکی که بین فیلم و بیننده‌اش در طی 100 سال عمر سینما بسته شده، دهن‌کجی می‌کنند. فشار فزاینده‌ای که فیلم روی بیننده وارد می‌کند باعث می‌شود تا بیننده غیر از مشکل فهم روابط علی و معلولی دنیای فیلم، یک فشار روانی دیگر را هم حس کند. هانکه در جای جای فیلم برای تنفس تماشاگر و تخلیه‌ی فشار روانی، صحنه‌هایی را پیش‌بینی کرده که با نگاهی دوباره، همان‌ها هم دست کمی از بقیه‌ی صحنه‌های فیلم ندارند. به هر حال باید اشاره کرد که اگر فیلم می‌بینید تا کیف کنید، هیچ‌گاه یک فیلم از “هانکه” انتخاب خوبی نخواهد بود!
